Exploring Our World, One Step at a Time

Big Adventures Start with Little Trips

From library visits to park walks, every outing helps children discover, learn, and grow beyond the nursery walls.

Our Community

Building Connections Beyond the Nursery

At General Day Nursery, we believe that children thrive when they feel connected to the world around them. That’s why we prioritise opportunities for children to engage with our local community, helping them develop a sense of belonging, empathy, and curiosity about the world beyond nursery walls.

From intergenerational friendships to library visits and neighbourhood adventures, we ensure that children gain valuable life experiences that enrich their learning and build cultural capital.

Bridging the Generational Gap

Our Partnership with Parr Nursing Home

In August 2018, we established a heartwarming partnership with Parr Nursing Home in St Helens. Our pre-school children would regularly visit the residents, spending time together to play games, make crafts, and build friendships. These visits were filled with laughter, storytelling, and valuable life lessons for both the children and the residents.

We believe that this intergenerational connection helps children understand the differences between generations and develop kindness, empathy, and respect for others. The residents, in turn, enjoyed the lively presence of the children, creating a sense of joy and purpose.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these visits were put on hold. However, we’ve continued to maintain the connection by sending letters, pictures, and artwork to the residents. It’s our hope that we’ll be able to resume our in-person visits soon.

Library Trips

Encouraging a Love of Reading

Since September 2021, our pre-school children have been visiting the local library as part of their learning journey. The children love the independence of choosing their own books and bringing them back to nursery to read with staff and friends.

These trips foster a love of reading, help children understand how to use community services, and build their confidence in navigating new environments. Each child has the opportunity to engage with books that interest them, sparking curiosity and imagination.

Why Community Engagement Matters

At General Day Nursery, we see our community as an extension of our learning environment. Engaging with the world outside helps children develop a better understanding of the people, places, and services that make up their community.
